  Motorcoach sales steady, but down in Q1, ABA report finds

Based on surveys of the major motorcoach manufacturers that sell vehicles in the U.S. and Canada, motorcoach sales from the participating manufacturers in the first quarter of 2018 were 622 units sold (431 new vehicles and 191 pre-owned vehicles) versus 734 sold in 2017 (510 new and 224 pre-owned).

"We are still seeing strong sales numbers as well as hearing that bus operators and manufacturers are confident in a successful 2018," said ABAF President Peter Pantuso. "The economy is strong, and companies continue to invest in newer vehicles to attract more passengers."

The first quarter sales numbers were dominated once again by companies purchasing large 45-foot new motorcoaches.   OurBus seeking partners to launch intercity routes

NEW YORK CITY  -  OurBus, a crowd-sourcing tech company, is seeking carriers to partner in launching 74 intercity routes across the United States, said co-founder and CEO Narinder Singh.

 

OurBus, a crowd-sourcing tech company, is seeking carriers to partner in launching 74 intercity routes across the United States, said co-founder and CEO Narinder Singh.

"We have short-listed 74 routes where we think the services and partnerships can come into effect," Singh said. "There are a lot of city pairs that need these kinds of services. There is demand, there are people traveling and there are less options."  Those routes could keep 220 motorcoaches in daily service, he said.

OurBus was founded in 2016 and has partnered with motorcoach carriers to operate 16 commuter routes and nine intercity routes, mostly serving New York State and New Jersey. It also operates routes to Washington, D.C., and West Chester, Pa.

  New Electric Type A School Bus Coming From Collins

The electric school bus market keeps charging up, now with a new Type A model on the way from Collins Bus Corp.  The forthcoming Collins electric school bus utilizes Motiv Power Systems' Electric Powered Intelligent Chassis (EPIC), based on the Ford E-450 platform.

Motiv's EPIC 4 Dearborn, the chassis for the Collins electric bus, has a gross vehicle weight rating of 14,500 pounds and a range of up to 75 miles.

The battery pack capacity is 85 or 106 kilowatt-hours, with charging times of two hours for 50%, four hours for 75%, and eight hours for 100%.

The new electric Type A model joins Collins' existing alternative-fuel school buses, which are powered by propane and compressed natural gas.

Kash Sethi, director of sales for Motiv, told SBF in April that a few school districts had already started applying for grant funding for the new Collins electric school bus. He said that the Motiv-powered Type A model is expected to be ready for delivery in the third quarter of this year.

Motiv is a Ford eQVM-approved provider of all-electric chassis for commercial trucks and buses. The company also supplies the powertrains for electric school bus models from Trans Tech and Starcraft/Creative Bus Sales.

At the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in Long Beach in early May, Motiv showcased the forthcoming Adaptive Battery Controller (ABC), its new technology for monitoring and controlling multiple independent battery packs.
