  MCI completes production of first D45 CRT LE Commuter Coach

Motor Coach Industries (MCI) delivered the first of its all new MCI D45 CRT LE, the company's next-generation Commuter Coach.

The coach offers modern styling and rider comfort with passenger accessibility via a second door with a low-entry automatic ramp system. The Low-Entry Vestibule design provides comfortable seating for up to five passengers, including two with mobility devices plus an attendant.

Following rigorous in-service testing by public and private transportation organizations across the nation, the first full production unit, # 81000, has rolled off the production line for delivery.


The coach offers modern styling and rider comfort with passenger accessibility via a second door with a low-entry automatic ramp system. The Low-Entry Vestibule design provides comfortable seating for up to five passengers, including two with mobility devices plus an attendant.

Everything about the MCI design project was new. "Our research and customer feedback demonstrated a need for more efficient, well-designed options for mobility challenged passengers," said Brent Maitland, MCI VP, marketing and product planning. "The D45 CRT LE entry simplifies the boarding process, matching low-floor transit dwell times, and as importantly improves the overall passenger experience."

A conventional motorcoach wheelchair lift takes an estimated eight to 10 minutes to deploy; involving a multi-step process. Operating a wheelchair lift requires significant driver training. The lift elevates the passenger in the air to a slide-door entry and requires several driver maneuvers and interior seat adjustments.   CCW develops its largest electric bus battery capacity

Complete Coach Works (CCW), an innovator in heavy-duty electric transportation, announced that they now offer an optional 466 kWh onboard energy storage system.

CCW increased its Zero Emission Propulsion System (ZEPS) battery pack in order to increase power and range. Currently, there are more than 50 ZEPS buses deployed in service across the nation with more than three million revenue miles. These deployments have been proven to perform successfully in all types of weather conditions, according to CCW.

IndyGo and Indy Airport operate 30 ZEPS buses for its day-to-day operations. The City of McAllen Transit Department utilizes two ZEPS buses to operate out of the city’s International Transit Terminal where passengers can connect for several international, national, regional and intercity destinations.

Using advanced lithium-ion batteries and liquid-cooled all-electric drive systems, the performance of ZEPS delivers a significantly longer operating range while maintaining battery life. Other features include a permanent magnet synchronous motor that provides maximum torque at the start and a smooth acceleration profile.

The ZEPS saga started as an option to provide customers a clean, cost-effective, and viable alternative to fossil fuel. Working with its sister company Transit Sales International, CCW developed its own system by taking an existing low-floor transit bus and rebuilt it as a battery-electric bus. The resulting ZEPS bus offers economical options to bus operators looking to start an electric bus operation.   Indiana District Approves Purchase of School Bus Stop-Arm Cameras

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - A school district here approved funding on Monday to install stop-arm cameras on its school buses.

The South Bend Community School Corp. board, at their meeting, unanimously approved the purchase of 192 camera systems that will cost approximately $456,504, according to the news source. Each bus will be equipped with two stop-arm cameras and three 360-degree cameras around the bus to record the license plate of stop-arm violators, WNDU reports.

The cameras are expected to be installed on all of the district’s buses by the beginning of the 2019-20 school year, according to the news source.

Juan Martinez-Legus, the director of transportation for South Bend Community School Corp., told WNDU that "this is a huge deal for our transportation department moving forward," and that the district is "going to do everything we can to protect our kids."

Martinez-Legus added that the cameras will send a message to motorists that "if you pass a South Bend bus, you will receive a citation." (School bus drivers in South Bend had their stop arms run 402 times in a single day when they participated in the 2018 National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services annual stop-arm survey, Martinez-Legus told SBF.)

The district's decision to install the cameras comes after the fatal school bus crash in Rochester, Indiana, in October that killed three students and seriously injured one other. As SBF previously reported, the motorist told investigators that she didn't see the bus, which had its lights flashing and stop-arm extended, or the students until it was too late.
