  Prevost Celebrates 95 Years

Founded in Quebec in 1924 by cabinet and wooden bus builder, Eugene Prevost, the company is the oldest coach manufacturer in North America.

  From Prevost:

Ste. Claire, QBC - The 95th anniversary of Prevost was commemorated in Sainte-Claire, Quebec in June with a celebration that included food, live music and other entertainment, coaches to explore and tours of the Prevost manufacturing plant.

Founded in Quebec in 1924 by cabinet and wooden bus builder, Eugene Prevost, the company is the oldest coach manufacturer in North America.

Scores of special guests including past and present employees, government officials and people from the community attended. The extensive vehicle display at the celebration featured current Prevost model coaches - including the newly redesigned X3-45, a converted motorhome and a corporate coach as well as a mobile service van and a beautiful 1952 Prevost Citadin antique bus restored by the Heritage Society of Sainte-Claire.

"The 95th Anniversary celebration in Quebec was a huge success as we had more than 4500 people joining us at the factory," said Prevost General Manager, Francois Tremblay. "I'm honored that so many families and special guests were there to celebrate with their Prevost family. We take great pride in what we do and to be able to share 95 years of such strong heritage with our community was a very special experience for us."

Q2 motorcoach sales down slightly, ABA Foundation report finds

  From Metro:

Based on surveys of the major manufacturers that sell vehicles in the U.S. and Canada, motorcoach sales from the participating manufacturers saw a decrease over the prior year's second quarter to a total of 766 units (502 new coaches and 264 pre-owned coaches), according to the American Bus Association Foundation's Motorcoach Builder Survey.

There was an overall 15% decrease in sales year over year. However, pre-owned vehicle sales were up by 11% over 2018 second quarter sales. The biggest drop in sales was in the 40 to 45 foot group, which went from 15 sold in the second quarter of 2018 to 4 sold in the second quarter of 2019.

"Despite a small drop year over year, we are still seeing strong sales numbers," said Peter Pantuso, president of the ABA Foundation. "The sale of more than 700 buses in a quarter shows companies are still investing in their products to ensure customers are experiencing trips in updated vehicles offering them the convenience and amenities they demand."

Shake-Ups Prompt a Closer Look at Safety

  From School Bus Fleet:

As you may have heard, we here in Southern California were recently shaken up by a couple of earthquakes. Although they were felt across a significant distance, overall damages and injuries were minimal outside of the epicenter, just a little northeast of the town of Ridgecrest.

Still, it was a powerful reminder of the importance of ensuring safe practices and emergency planning are in place at your workplace or operation. (No doubt our California readers conduct and participate in earthquake safety drills with staff and students every year.)

That is not to discount day-to-day safety practices. And one of the most important, as we were reminded recently by the results from the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services' (NASDPTS') annual survey on stop-arm running incidents, is loading and unloading students.

Nearly 131,000 school bus drivers hailing from 39 states participated in NASDPTS' ninth annual survey. Talking of shake-ups: those drivers reported that over 95,000 vehicles passed their buses illegally on a single day earlier this year. That number is even greater than last year's shocking total of more than 83,000 vehicles running stop arms.

That number is even greater than last year's shocking total of more than 83,000 vehicles running stop arms.

The association said that these survey results indicate that significantly more than 17 million violations occur over the course of a 180-day school year, since not all school bus drivers participated in the survey.

Although we all agree that the motoring public needs to be more cautious  -  always slowing down when the bus's yellow lights flash and stopping when the red warning lights and stop arm are deployed  -  bus drivers can also help mitigate the number of dangerous incidents by following safe and consistent loading and unloading practices.

California driver instructor Sabine Konrad reminds readers in our story on the state's loading and unloading practices to stay focused during the entire process, use precise timing with the lights and the entrance door, and check the danger zone for students multiple times. She also details the practice of escorting students as they cross roadways, which is done...............READ MORE >
