Tracking tire costs: fractions of a cent add up

"For a $550 tire with a $50 casing value divided by a 100,000-mile tire average, the cost per tire mile would be $0.005", said Bill Kaiser, president of Motorcoach Tire Sales of Columbus, Georgia. "The cost can vary by tire type. The consensus of the 20 Groups (peer consulting organizations) I have spoken to is that the target cost should be around .0045 cents per tire mile."

From Bus & Motorcoach News:

How much are you spending on tires? Sharpen a pencil and figure your cost per tire mile, and you may find that a fraction of a cent per mile can add up to a lot of dollars. The difference might be in the tires you buy.

A typical motorcoach operator will spend half a cent per tire mile, while $0.0045 is considered an optimum expense. But extend the calculation to the typical range of six tires and the difference could be $300.

Your mileage may vary, of course.

"If you do a lot of your business in cities and are doing a lot of twisting and turning, you can have a higher cost per mile because the tires are wearing out quicker," Kaiser said. "If you are doing more charters and line runs, your tires are going to wear longer."

Motorcoach Tire Sales offers products from six manufacturers.

"There are so many more offerings now than there were 10 or 20 years ago. The industry has benefited from that," Kaiser said. "Motorcoach Tire Sales offers both top-level brands and more value-priced brands. However, only 20-ply and 75-mph or higher speed rated brands are offered."

Motorcoach Tire Sales recently added the Hankook, GITI and Magna brands to its lineup of Toyo, Yokohama and Pirelli tires. The brands include industry standards and what Kaiser calls "value brands."

"The value brand tires are simply at a lower price point because they are not well known in the U.S., and they are being aggressive to try to get into the market. By no means does that mean they are not quality tires," he said. "The company’s value brand offerings include some manufacturers that are lesser-known in the U.S. market but offer products that meet or exceed the ply and speed ratings required for motorcoach application. I want to ensure that there are low-price options for operators who wish to have that.".  Comparison shopping....... READ MORE >

Prince George Cougars Hockey Team Excited About New Prevost H3-45

  From Prevost:

Greensboro, NC - Western Canadian hockey team, the Prince George Cougars, located in Prince George, British Columbia, have partnered with Pacific Western Group of Companies (PWT) to acquire a 2020 Prevost H3-45. The Cougars 10-year relationship with PWT made the decision to acquire the Prevost coach, which will transport the Prince George Cougars hockey team, an easy one.

James Vine, PWT Business Development Director, says he was highly impressed with Prevost's delivery time. "We ordered the 2020 H3-45 in mid-May and received it in September," says Vine. "This was really impressive and satisfying because we've never experienced such a quick turn-around and it was just in time for the new hockey season which was great."

The Cougars 10-year relationship with PWT made the decision to acquire the Prevost coach, which will transport the Prince George Cougars hockey team, an easy one.

The new coach was completely tailored to the teams needs with 48 seats (selected by the players), card tables in both the front and back of the coach, extra leg room, 3pt. seat belts, custom headrests and features such as surround cameras that show the area outside the coach and an entertainment system that allows each passenger to choose their own entertainment options . The unique features and upgrades allow the players to travel in luxury, comfort and safety.

"Replacing a few of the seats to install extra card tables was really important to us," says Andy Beesley, Vice President of the Prince George Cougars. "With one of the heaviest travel schedules in the league, the Prevost is a great coach for the guys to relax in and the tables give them the opportunity to bond and create deep connections with their teammates."

The added safety features coupled with the timing of the delivery was particularly important to PWT. Upon delivery of the new coach, Prevost hosted a training session for the PWT maintenance team at their facility to show the mechanics the differences in the new coach. "We truly appreciate all the hard work Prevost did for us and we were very happy with the work the Prevost design team did with the installation of the wrap on our coach," says Vine.

The Prince George Cougars are a part of the Western Hockey League (WHL), a junior league based in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. The team travels more than 25,000 miles per season in wintery Canadian conditions—from Portland, OR to Winnipeg, Canada. "Our Prevost is more than just transportation - it's a critical member of our team," says Beesley. "When our bright, shiny, reliable bus pulls into towns, it not only looks good but gives us a great sense of pride to be riding in a Prevost."

New York Contractor, District Roll Out 4 Electric School Buses

 From School Bus Fleet:

BAY SHORE, N.Y. - A school bus contractor and district here recently rolled out four new all-electric Blue Bird school buses.

The new buses for Suffolk Transportation Service and Bay Shore Union Free School District are part of the first production line series of electric models (non-development, hybrid, or retrofit models) from Blue Bird, according to a news release from the school bus contractor. (Non-development models means the buses are not prototypes or part of a special order.) The district purchased the buses with a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) coordinated by Suffolk Transportation Service and Robert McBride Consulting.

"The school bus of the future is here today," said John Corrado, president of Suffolk Transportation Service. "These fully electric buses are clean, efficient, and provide a smooth, quiet ride. A typical bus consumes 1,500 gallons of diesel fuel each school year, so just through this purchase the Bay Shore School District is reducing consumption of fossil fuel by nearly 6,000 gallons and lowering its carbon footprint."

Joseph Bond, the superintendent for Bay Shore Union Free School District, added that the new buses will greatly benefit students transportation and improve the city’s mission to reduce its overall carbon footprint.

Suffolk Transportation Service currently provides pupil transportation to 6,600 Bay Shore Union Free School District students every day.

The Blue Bird electric buses are powered by Cummins all-electric drivetrains and will be able to travel up to 120 miles on a charge, according to Suffolk Transportation Service. In addition to Bay Shore, approximately 100 Blue Bird electric models were introduced during the 2019-20 school year in various states, including California, Colorado, and New Jersey.

According to Richard Gallager, the director of transportation for Bay Shore Union Free School District, the cost to operate an electric bus is about $0.17 per mile compared to $0.75 per mile for a diesel model........... .READ MORE >
