  Van Hool takeover approved, service and product continues

VDL of the Netherlands and Germany’s Schmitz Cargobull have reached an agreement with the receivers to take over Van Hool.

“We are happy that we can launch a quick restart with VDL Groep and GRW/Schmitz Cargobull,” Van Hool’s receivers announced in a press release after reaching an agreement in principle with these two parties.

COVID-19 and longstanding, unresolved family disputes proved to be too much for Van Hool to go forward under the previous ownership and management. Despite the loss of over 1,500 jobs, the receivers were satisfied that the takeover of bankrupt Van Hool by VDL and Schmitz Cargobull was the best solution for the remaining...............................

  NTSB Adds 2 Board Members

From Metro:

Alvin Brown and J. Todd Inman were sworn in as members of the National Transportation Safety Board, filling two vacancies and bringing the non-partisan board to full strength.

The new members were nominated by President Biden and confirmed by the Senate. Brown’s term as a board member is through 2026; Inman’s term runs through 2027. While board member terms are five years, each are filling existing slots.

Bringing Experience to the NTSB

Brown comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation, where he served as senior adviser for community infrastructure opportunities. From 2011 to 2015, he was mayor of Jacksonville, FL..............................

  Growing Trend in Public Education: Four Day School Weeks

Four-day school weeks are gaining popularity nationwide to save money and recruit new teachers. In fact, a PBS News article in September reported that nearly 900 school districts operate on a four-day schedule.

Education Week ties the growing trend to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the goal of boosting recruitment and retention. Colorado has nearly two-thirds of its school districts running on a shortened schedule. According to an article by KXAN, more than 86 districts in Texas have made the switch.

One of the most recent is Sanger Independent School District located north of Fort Worth. The district announced at the end of last month that it is switching to a four-day school week in October in the hope of recruiting more teachers. A local news article added that Sanger ISD will extend its school days by 35 minutes on Mondays through Thursdays and is working to provide free or affordable childcare for elementary school students on Fridays when school is not in session....................................
