Editor's note: This op-ed for Bus & Motorcoach News is written by Kevin Whitworth, the longtime organizer of the UMA Maintenance Interchange and the UMA Maintenance Competition.
One fact in the worldwide bus and motorcoach community can't be denied: UMA continues to lead the way in mechanic/technician opportunities. There's not even a close second. Whether it's the day-long Maintenance Interchange or testing their skills at the Maintenance Competition, technicians have numerous chances to learn and exchange ideas, meet and develop new relationships, and compete and test their skills alongside their peers. And it just got better!
At the Nov. 4 Town Hall, UMA President/CEO Scott Michael announced a new award that coincides with the Maintenance Competition Rising Star award, the Ring of Honor Scholarship. The Rising Star winner will receive this $500 scholarship toward .......................

STAR Transit announces Employee and Driver of the Year |

Seven employees were recently honored during STAR Transit's Annual Bus Roadeo and Employee Awards Luncheon. Ted Crouch was named the 2025 Employee of the Year, and TD Youngblood received the 2025 Driver of the Year award.
Nominees for Driver of the Year included Youngblood, Nola Martin, Unterrius Collier, and Joe Rauls. Youngblood, who has been with the agency for over nine years, currently drives in Kaufman County.
“TD has been a steadfast and dependable member of our team for over nine years. His commitment to safety, customer service, and professionalism sets a high bar for all of us,” said Antonio Harris, STAR Transit transportation director. “We're grateful for the positivity and dedication he brings to STAR Transit every day.”
As the recipient of Driver of the Year, Youngblood received $1,500.

Driving over 1,000 miles across multiple states and meeting with over a dozen customers, BraunAbility gathered feedback from operators, bus drivers, fleet managers and transportation directors in the public and school transport space on what they want to see in an updated lift.
The result was on display at the Transporting Students with Disabilities and Special Needs Conference in Frisco, Texas, Trade Show. BraunAbility's Dual Parallel Arm Lift Refresh, available on Century and Millennium Series Lifts, updates a product that has seen changes since 2005.
Reed Christiansen, commercial product manager for the company, explained that in 2019 they conducted a survey to customers to understand exactly what they need.
