Master’s Transportation Expansion

John Goodbrake, President & CEO

The company was founded in 1992. John Goodbrake began purchasing the company in 2000, when he relocated the headquarters to south Kansas City leaving a sales location based in Kearney, NE.

In 2003, Goodbrake opened a sales and service location in Branson, MO and further expanded the business into new and used school bus sales. In 2008, Master's opened a sales location in Hot Springs, AR to serve the state of Arkansas.

In 2015, Master's Transportation acquired Mile High Bus Sales based in Centennial, CO. Shortly thereafter Master's relocated the dealership to downtown Denver, CO to offer a significantly larger footprint including rental, sales, and service.

In 2017, Master's growth ratcheted up significantly as they opened a rental and sales facilities in Irving, TX, serving the Dallas/Fort Worth area; one in Houston, TX, serving the Houston community; and they have begun offering bus rentals in the San Antonio, TX area.

The company has also recently opened 2 offices in the state of California including one in San Diego, CA, serving the San Diego community; and one in Newark CA, serving the bay area. Missouri has three locations including the headquarters in Belton, MO, serving the Kansas City area; Branson, MO, serving the Ozark area; and one in St. Ann, MO, serving the St. Louis area. "We are excited about the growth and look forward to continuing our expansion in 2018", said Goodbrake.

The Master’s Difference

In addition to opening offices across the country, the Master’s team is also committed to providing a welcoming environment for customers to engage with staff. "When customers walk through our doors, we want them to feel comfortable and immediately get a sense of Master’s Transportation", said JoAnn Bartlett, Director of Marketing.

Master’s Transportation believes in the value of building long-term relationships with their customers. "We place our core values prominently in our offices so customers can see and know how we define ourselves as a company," said Bartlett. Their core values are comprised of:

  • They relentlessly pursue excellence
  • They demand a culture of high integrity
  • They have a positive can-do attitude
  • They are solution oriented.

In addition to significant growth and providing a welcoming environment, Master’s continually looks for ways to serve the unique needs of its customers.

"We believe that offering rental vehicles to our customers on a daily, weekly, monthly or a seasonal basis meets a need in our markets.

"For our retail customers they need reliable and comparable transportation when their vehicles are in for service and for our business customers, such as local transportation companies, they need an additional source of shuttles when large events are happening in a community."

"We look to meet the needs of both our retail and commercial customers", said Matthew Winston, Vice President.

In addition to offering rental vehicles in a variety of configurations and time periods, Master’s Transportation also has a unique perspective when it comes to leasing vehicles.

One example they shared is that they partner with a number of colleges and universities to offer 9-month seasonal leases. The university only makes 9 payments a year and has transportation available during the normal school year. "This idea came directly from listening to our customers and designing a lease that meets their unique needs", shared Goodbrake.

Master’s Transportation also serves the needs of a growing number of school districts across the country. Master’s is a Collins school bus dealer for the states of AR, IA, KS, MO, NE, CO, and TX. They hope to become a dealer in additional states in the near term as they continue to grow their footprint. In addition to new school buses, Master’s has built an impressive reputation for offering high quality, used school buses in a variety of configurations. "We have 200 used school buses either in stock or arriving for Spring/Summer delivery," said John Hatman, Vice President.

The next planned expansion includes Phoenix, AR; Portland, OR; Las Vegas, NV; Seattle, WA; Los Angeles, CA; Orlando, FL; Atlanta, GA, and Nashville, TN. Rental Program Note:

The rental program seems to be a great solution for operators that have season demands but do not need the expense of purchasing or leasing additional units. The flexibility in this program is ideal for operators watching their margins, at the same time allowing them to pick up additional revenue when the demand calls for it. It also allows operators to take care of their customers without farming out the business to their competitors.
